Mobile broadband has arrived in the United Kingdom with more and more people discovering the benefits of being connected when travelling.  While the term “broadband” refers to any of several types of high-speed internet connection, mobile broadband refers to high-speed broadband internet that can travel with you. That travel can be anywhere throughout the UK where a mobile phone service is available from your provider.

Mobile broadband should not be confused with wireless broadband. This kind of service works only within the home.  Many UK broadband providers will supply a router when you sign up for their broadband service.  Technically, this is referred to as “fixed line” broadband because the router itself is “fixed”, or tied, to the incoming broadband line.  The router sends out a signal within the home that can be accessed by any internet-enabled device, such as a laptop. 

True mobile broadband, however, can be accessed anywhere in the world.  You may have heard of the 3G and 4G networks, and these are the primary means of distributing and accessing the internet when you’re away from home or office.  Typically this involves a USB receiver that you plug into your laptop – and a qualifying plan, of course.

Most plans involve limits on data usage, so you’ll need to consider how you plan to use your mobile broadband.  Consider not only where you plan to roam and whether or not coverage is available in all those places, but how much you’ll be uploading and downloading files, as well as the speed you need.
