The Nokia X3 is a stripped down, more basic version of another Nokia mobile phone – the X6. While the X6 was widely criticised in mobile phone reviews for a host of different issues, the slimmed down Nokia X3 seems to be a more attractive option as a low cost mobile phone.

The biggest difference between the X3 and its older brother, the X6, is that the X3 no longer has a touch screen, and instead reverts back to a more traditional hard 1-9, non-QWERTY keyboard. This keyboard slides out from the bottom of the phone, and is easy to use despite being relatively low tech.

The music player on the Nokia X3 is well thought out, and perhaps an improvement on the X6 despite not coming with the Nokia ‘Comes With Music’ package. The camera, though, is a big step down on the Nokia X3 as it shuns the Carl Zeiss lenses which are used on more expensive Nokia mobile phones for a cheaper version. Despite this drop in lens quality, the camera on the phone will still take good quality photographs.

One of the biggest problems with the Nokia X3, though, is the feel of the phone. As the handset is designed to be a cheap mobile phone, it can feel poorly made and unwieldy at times. Also, due to the lack of ‘Comes With Music’, owners of other Nokia mobile phones can’t transfer their download library to the X3 due to digital rights management issues.

The Nokia 7230 is a low budget handset that is constructed well. It is bland but sturdy and can be purchased in either the standard black and chrome or a shocking pink fuchsia.

The highlights of this phone are that it makes messaging, sharing images and social networking a dawdle; it is a perfect first buy for those people upgrading from a regular Nokia phone. But although the phone can handle internet browsing, social networks and media playback, it is rather fiddly, incredibly slow and does so on a pretty small screen.

The camera has 3.2 megapixels, a video camera and player and a shortcut button on the side of the handset but if you opt not to use that you have to hunt for the camera launch in the Apps folder. You’ll find it possible only to take shots in good light, as there is no built in flash.

There is a built in music player and has the welcome addition of a 3.5 mm headphone jack that means you can listen to your favourite tracks or the FM radio on your favourite headphones. A minus of the audio player is that there is no physical volume control.

Sometimes the select, call and end buttons on the front panel need some heavy pressing before they register and this could be a real pain in the neck if you were in a hurry.

But the phone is a Nokia, which means that it’s easy to navigate the menus. If you want to check out other similar phones then look for the Sony Ericsson Jalou or the T-Mobile pulse Mini.

Still one of the most successful of Nokia’s phones, the N95 8 GB does everything the original N95 does, only better. Key differences include a larger screen and extended battery life.

At its core, the Nokia N95 8GB includes GPS satellite navigation, a five megapixel camera with auto focus, 3G video calling, Wi-Fi internet connection, and ultra-fast HSDPA data transfer. And that is just the beginning.

Physically, the Nokia N95 8 GB is a bulky phone that weighs about 120 grams; however, with a phone of this type, size isn’t a primary issue for buyers. The screen takes up most of the front, with a 2.6 inch display of 16 million colours featuring ambient light detection which is used to control brightness in differing lighting conditions. Located beneath it are the navigation keys, which are of traditional Nokia arrangement and functionality.

The camera is quite impressive. At 5 megapixels, it features Carl-Zeiss optics and a Tessar lens for sharp, vividly coloured photographs. What is missing is optical zoom, but there is auto focus, flash, and that wonderful lens. The video camera is quite nice as well, with VGA recording resolution at up to 30 frames per second with stereo audio. A second, front-facing camera enables video calling.

Other features include a music player, stereo FM radio, integrated hands-free speaker, and the best connectivity you could ask for. The only thing missing is expandable memory.

While it has been on the market for awhile, the Nokia N95 8 GB is still considered a great phone. It’s available via SIM-free deals.

The Nokia 6303 Classic shows that Nokia has cleverly realised that not all phone users want an all singing all dancing techno box. There are still many users who are quite happy just to talk and text. So they have taken their popular Nokia 6300 and given it a make over. It’s elegant, fits your hand shape and has a strong finish, making it a tough, rough and tumble phone you can take anywhere.

The 2.2 inch screen is amply big enough for texting, which gives plenty of room to house the keypad so that typing text messages is not a fiddly task. It also features a good quality camera with 3.2 megapixels, LED flash and auto focus, and the video works at a respectable 15 frames per second.

The music player supports all common formats, includes FM radio and there is the ability to add a memory chip to boost the 17MB by a further 4GB. The sound quality is excellent and the addition of a 3.5mm headphone jack is a useful feature.

This phone has USB and Bluetooth 2.0 and connectivity is good. It also supports voice command, maps, email capability and web browsing. Upgrading the battery has given it a much longer lifespan and makes the Nokia 6303 a winning upgrade to a favourite phone.

This is a budget phone in every sense, not a high tech, touchscreen G3 marvel, but it is very good for what it sets out to do. If you like simple Nokia phone styling, there is not much wrong with the Nokia 6303.

A Nokia E71 review reveals that this is probably the greatest threat to the BlackBerry Bold, with its excellent keyboard for those who like composing long emails and text messages. This competes on equal footing with its full QWERTY keyboard and it is easy and comfortable to use. The Nokia’s push email capacity is certainly a match for the BlackBerry.

The E71 has a perfectly adequate 3.2-megapixel camera, video and Internet browsing capabilities and media player. The screen although only 2.36 inches wide has enough technology behind it to give a clear and sharp image, even in moderate sunlight.

The Nokia E71 comes with Bluetooth and is fully compatible with most brands of hands free kit. The multimedia set up includes FM radio with visual support, and uses RealPlayer to run video clips.

In terms of connectivity the E71 covers all bases, as well as Bluetooth and you can hook up with WLAN, a micro USB port and even infrared that supports VOiP calls, and a 2.5mm headphone jack point. The battery life is good as long as you are not making extensive use of the WLAN or GPS systems, which it is advisable to switch off when not in use.

There are pros and cons with this compact phone, while its size and displays are excellent, a better camera would help it hold its own against its rival BlackBerry. It stands up well to the competition when comparing battery life, applications and connectivity, but the Blackberry wins on display and memory. Where the Nokia scores is for users who want to communicate and its keyboard and connectivity make it worthy of consideration.

When people are being bombarded by the latest mobile phones that all want to be the best smartphone, it’s a bit of a joy to come across a quality handset that makes no bones about just being a mobile phone, albeit one that has several great features.

The most obvious thing about the Nokia N79 is the exchangeable covers, an interesting innovation even for Nokia mobile phones. But the covers are more than exchangeable – they also affect the theme colour, which automatically alters to the cover colour. A small feature, but very neat.

The N79 comes equipped with GPS (it uses Google Maps), giving it an advantage over many comparable mobile phones, and also boasts an FM transmitter, allowing users to broadcasts tracks stored on the phone through other stereos, which could prove very useful on long car trips. There’s also an FM radio and, yes, a 3.5mm headphone jack for good listening.

About the only failing is in the camera. For all that its five megapixels, it’s very disappointing in terms of picture quality – Nokia has done cameras much better on other models.

Likewise, the keypad is a little bit cramped, and certainly not the best effort Nokia’s ever made.

Other than that it’s an excellent set, and the cover novelty might offer it an edge. But, really, that’s the only thing that does set it apart from many other Nokia mobile phones, although the fact that it’s available free on many low-end contracts will make it appealing to some consumers.

Nokia tries to expand its reach among the business crowd with the Nokia E75, a compact phone that offers not one, but two keypads.

The QWERTY keyboard pulls out and offers a very good typing experience for messaging, even allowing copy and cut and paste. Although it’s far from the biggest around (and not even the biggest Nokia has produced) it’s very serviceable, and contains some good ideas, such as the dedicated ‘@’ key, which can save a great deal of fiddling.

Those who prefer regular texting can use the numerical keypad although, oddly, it’s nowhere near as good on the fingers as the keyboard – a strange design.

The mobile phone does come with a great deal. There’s Wi-Fi, GPS, and 3.5G, as well as a very decent camera that’s also good with movies.

It’s all well designed, with a small but very solid case, and automatic rotation to landscape mode when held horizontally. The real problem, if it is a problem, is that it doesn’t offer significant advances over older models in the E series from Nokia; there’s no huge incentive for users of those models to upgrade to this – and an upgrade is all it is, not a brand new model, by any means.

While it’s a good phone with some appealing features, Nokia has done this better elsewhere. That said, the choice between two keyboards, each offering a different experience, is a good one that could be incorporated into other phones at some point. This was a good try, but not completely successful.

The surprise is that it’s taken Nokia so long to enter the touchscreen market. But maybe there’s a method to their madness: after all, Nokia mobile phones have set the standard for phones for so long that perhaps they wanted to wait until they could do it right.

But as a touchscreen phone, does the Nokia 5800 Chrome actually do it right? The answer is a qualified yes. It does have an awful lot going for it. It offers GPS using Nokia Maps, Wi-Fi, 3.5G, and even comes with music for those getting an Orange mobile phone contract.

Being a Nokia, the phone element is familiar and very solid and serviceable, better than most on the market. The camera could be a lot better, weighing in at just 3.2 megapixels, less than the company uses on other handsets (and it shows in the pictures).

A shame, too, that Nokia didn’t take the time to come up with a completely new interface for this phone. It’s been adapted from other Nokia smartphones, and somehow doesn’t work quite right with the touchscreen.

What about the touchscreen? After all, that’s the major innovation here. It does offer the option between using fingers or the bundled stylus, but perhaps that’s just because the screen really isn’t as responsive to fingers as it ideally should be, and certainly isn’t as responsive as some of the competition.

All in all, it’s an acceptable phone, but after waiting so long to jump into touchscreens, the expectation is that Nokia would have done a more thorough job of it.
