Samsung does have a knack for putting together some good looking phones – especially when mixing touch screen technology with keypad user-friendliness, and slide phone compactness. And, the Samsung Tocco Ultra shows off this talent well.

The AMOLED screen is bright, with vivid colours that pop out at you when you’re looking at it. The screen is a touch screen, so you can dial or text from either it or your keypad, depending upon your preference. The keypad itself is very user-friendly and it’s back lit. When carrying the phone, it feels sturdy and well-balanced, whether open or shut. And the phone is pleasant to look at – featuring a dark smoky black with an eye-pleasing hot red accent – or is that hot pink? On that one, the user has to decide, because the colour is a bit ambiguous – although it does look good. There is also a blue version available through limited sellers.

The key feature of this phone is the 8.0 megapixel camera. It is smashingly wonderful. Downfalls for this phone include the touch screen, which can be frustrating to use and the widget system. Also, there is no Wi-Fi or dedicated headphone jack. All-in-all, the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition is a stylish way to bring together the worlds of touch screen and keypad. The camera is one of the best, but the touch screen interface is weak.

If you’re looking for mobile phone deals on a contract mobile phone, the Samsung Tocco Ultra is available free with a £25 pay monthly plan.

The slim, smart-looking Sony Ericsson Aino has loads of great features packed into a combination touch-screen and traditional keypad phone.

Pros

The chic matte finish is understated, while the generous 3-inch screen is vivid and colourful. Media shortcuts include photo display, music, video playback, camera, or FM radio; all work admirably. The speakers perform well and the charging dock is conveniently angled to make viewing videos a pleasure. The Aino is one of Sony Ericsson’s latest mobile phones that come pre-loaded with the BBC iPlayer app so users can watch a selection of television shows instantly with just an internet connection. The camera features an LED flash and its 8.1 megapixel resolution is much more powerful than most of the latest mobile phones.

Cons

Like many other Sony Ericsson mobile phones, the Aino does not have a 3.5 mm headphone jack, which limits sound quality and audio playback. The touch-screen turns off as soon as the phone slide is opened; this creates some problems with internet navigation and ease of use.

Conclusion

The Aino is sleek and fits comfortably in the hand. The camera is excellent, video playback is impressive, the touch-screen functions fantastically, and the extras measure up nicely against the competition. Despite these benefits, though, there are certain aspects of the Aino that don’t seem to make much sense: an underused touch-screen, a rather boring interface, and a noticeably imbalanced feel when opened. Overall, the Sony Ericsson Aino can best be described as underwhelming.

For those looking for a good camera phone with a touch screen, the Samsung Pixon M8800 may be just the thing.

The Samsung Pixon M8800 is an attractive phone that has a very camera-like look and feel to it. Plus it has an easy-to-get-to shutter button on the side for quick access and there is an automatic lens cover – a plus for any camera phone.

As to performance, the 8 megapixel camera provides good-looking photos when shot in daylight, with a minimal amount of shutter lag – something you often find in mobile phone cameras. The pictures are sharp and colours are bright and vivid. In lower light settings, the pictures lose some of their pizzazz, mainly due to the LED flash (versus the better Xenon type). Other features include slow-motion video shooting, and geo-tagging. The Samsung Pixon M8800 also supports full length film watching, and supports DivX and Xvid formats.

Missing from the Samsung Pixon M8800 is a 3.5 mm headphone jack and the pair of headphones that comes with the phone doesn’t do the music player justice. Another negative point with this phone is the use of a resistive versus capacitive screen. This is particularly noticeable when texting and the lack of response can be quite frustrating.

If you are considering cheap mobile phones with touch screen and a decent camera, the Pixon M8800 is definitely worth looking at. For mobile phone deals on contract, O2 has several plans. The phone is also available SIM free from PrePayMania.

Still one of the most successful of Nokia’s phones, the N95 8 GB does everything the original N95 does, only better. Key differences include a larger screen and extended battery life.

At its core, the Nokia N95 8GB includes GPS satellite navigation, a five megapixel camera with auto focus, 3G video calling, Wi-Fi internet connection, and ultra-fast HSDPA data transfer. And that is just the beginning.

Physically, the Nokia N95 8 GB is a bulky phone that weighs about 120 grams; however, with a phone of this type, size isn’t a primary issue for buyers. The screen takes up most of the front, with a 2.6 inch display of 16 million colours featuring ambient light detection which is used to control brightness in differing lighting conditions. Located beneath it are the navigation keys, which are of traditional Nokia arrangement and functionality.

The camera is quite impressive. At 5 megapixels, it features Carl-Zeiss optics and a Tessar lens for sharp, vividly coloured photographs. What is missing is optical zoom, but there is auto focus, flash, and that wonderful lens. The video camera is quite nice as well, with VGA recording resolution at up to 30 frames per second with stereo audio. A second, front-facing camera enables video calling.

Other features include a music player, stereo FM radio, integrated hands-free speaker, and the best connectivity you could ask for. The only thing missing is expandable memory.

While it has been on the market for awhile, the Nokia N95 8 GB is still considered a great phone. It’s available via SIM-free deals.

For example, O2 are currently offering a free Sony Ericsson W995 handset through Dial a Phone for £20.00 per month on an 18 month contract. Included is 100 minutes of free voice calls and unlimited text messages but as a special offer you can have 14 months half price line rental taking the monthly charge to just £10.00 for the duration of the offer period.

If you need a little more free talk time then Vodafone is offering the same Sony Ericsson W995 handset free of charge for £35.00 a month through ‘phones 4 u’. Included in this plan are 300 free minutes of voice calls and 3000 free text messages. It is a12 month contract, but as part of a special offer you can get eight months half price line rental taking the monthly charge to £17.50 for the duration of the offer period.

If you are a light user then you may be more interested in the offer from 3. The W995 is again available as a free handset but for £15.00 per month on an 18 month contract you get 75 free minutes of voice calls and unlimited text messages.

Knowing your average or expected usage is key to deciding which deal will be better for you, but shopping around and comparing mobile phone deals shows there is something available to suit everyone’s needs.

The Xperia X1 is a Windows based smart phone and is ideal for those who are looking for an alternative to the Blackberry. It has a QWERTY keyboard, 3G and Wi-Fi access to the internet and is favoured by those who need a smartphone for business. The phone is available in several colours.

The phone has a three inch touch screen which is easy to use and the interface offers easy access to a number of applications, although some users may find it is not as responsive as they would like. A stylus is provided but these can prove to be awkward to use. The keyboard is not easy to use and may not be the best option for those who send a large number of emails each day.

The music player supports music files in several formats and files can be easily downloaded to the handset and there is also a video function.

Some users, particularly those who are using the handset for business, may find that the battery life is not long enough. The phone has a built in 3.2-megapixel camera which takes good quality photographs and has a flash for taking pictures in poor light and an automatic focus. The internal memory is 400mb and this can be boosted by the use of memory cards.

The phone also features mobile versions of Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel, adding to its value as a business phone as well as Microsoft Outlook for email applications.

After reading all the latest mobile phone news, comparing mobile phone reviews and deciding which handset you want to buy, the next thing to do is to shop around for a great deal.

If you have opted to have the Samsung Omnia Lite (B7300) as your new mobile phone then before you pre order one it is best to check the best deals on the market. If you are unsure as to which service provider to go to, it is made all the easier if you compare mobile phones online where often you can see different deals by different providers side by side making for a much more informed decision.

For example, you can pre order the Omnia Lite through one web based company who are offering this phone on the T-Mobile network for £35.00 per month for a 24 month contract. This may be a little steep for some but for a heavy mobile phone user it could be ideal as you get a free handset, 1200 free minutes any time any network and unlimited text messages. You also have the option of either 14 months half price line rental or a choice of a number of free gifts including £130.00 cash back or a Nintendo DSi.

As the Omnia Lite is one of the latest mobile phones you usually find that a free handset comes with a steeper line rental charge. One way around it is to pay an amount upfront for the phone; usually the more you pay for the phone the less the line rental is. Shopping around is recommended to find a good deal.

Sony Ericsson offers one of the largest ranges of mobile phones on the market. Their popular W910i is one of a set of ‘walkman’ phones and has been around for some time. This is one of the best phones in its range and always performs well. The good thing is that this is an older phone so you are now likely to be able to find this in with the cheap mobile phones deals, and will get a terrific phone at an excellent price. Whether you choose to get the W910i as a contract mobile phone or whether you have it as pay as you go, if listening to music is your thing you will not be disappointed with your new toy.

Sony has typically only provided you with the headphones that are made to go with their phone. You can buy an adapter to turn it into a 3.5mm standard jack but this is a pain to carry around and is easy to lose. It is therefore far simpler just to use the cheap and second-rate Sony headphones that come with it. On cheaper phones you wouldn’t mind so much, but this is supposed to be a serious MP3 player phone and therefore it does irritate somewhat. Another gripe is that whilst they do offer a memory card slot, it has to be a Sony memory card that also isn’t compatible with anything else. These cost a fortune compared to others on the market, leaving users feeling a bit hard done by.

The LG Secret is a slider phone that looks good and promises a great deal. The problem is that it really doesn’t deliver as much as it should.

Certainly the handset, which is widely available as a contract mobile phone or as a pay as you go mobile phone, looks good. It’s thin, but set up to be hardy, utilising tempered glass for the screen, and carbon fibre for the body – just like a car, in fact. No one will be disappointed by its appearance.

People will love the keypad, too, which is ideal for texting, well laid out and sensitive. The keys vibrate when touched, a good extra feature that offers confirmation of actions.

However, that’s about as far as the joy extends. Yes, there’s a touchscreen, but it only operates in certain modes, which gives users a decidedly strange experience – really, the only use is for playing games.

The camera has a tasty five megapixels, and is set up for images, video and even slow-motion, which all sounds good, until anyone tries to use it in low light, when the lack of a Xenon flash means very ropey picture quality. It’s as if LG had started the job but never quite got around to finishing it.

Indeed, that’s really the main criticism of the phone. It’s full of good ideas that aren’t seen all the way through. For instance, there a 3.5mm headphone adapter, but not a 3.5mm headphone jack, which would have been more satisfactory and much easier.
