In the United Kingdom there are two main types of phone package offered by all of the phone providers. It will depend upon how much you intend to use your phone, whether it will be short text messaging, or conversation. Realistically it will also depend on how much money you have available to spend on the mobile phone package.
Business users or people who will be using their mobile phone for quite a lot of time during the month are best purchasing a mobile phone contract. With a mobile phone contract you will usually get a free mobile phone and then be expected to pay a set fee every month. You will have a number of options to choose from depending on the mobile phone contract that you choose. These can include a restriction on the number of minutes when you can use the phone, or restrictions as to what networks you can call. If you go over this time limit you would normally have to pay an extra bill. The number of text messages that you are entitled to send every month may also be restricted. Some mobile phone operators allow unlimited calls and text messages, but with this mobile phone contract you will be paying high monthly premiums and need to be using up your allowance. However, some mobile phone contracts allow you to carry over remaining minutes to the following month.
For the young, or people who may not use the mobile for very much, have one for emergencies only, the best option is a "pay and you go" type mobile phone package. This is where you will enter into a "pay as you go" contract whereby all you initially pay for is the handset. An advantage is that you can choose from a wide selection of the latest handsets that will have all the extras that you need.
With pay as you go you “bank” a certain amount with the mobile phone operator depending on how often you think that you will be using the mobile phone. Once you have spent all of your mobile phone credit you can then top up your mobile phone with more credit. You can now buy credit for your mobile phone from many retailers and even online with a credit or debit card.
